Winter Health
By Elaine Broderick of Holistic Therapies Dublin
I rarely catch a cold.I am fairly healthy in my lifestyle- I cycle to work,I don't eat meat, I keep myself hydrated and if I do something my body doesn't like...I give it something it does e.g a glass of water for a cup of coffee! You do not have to follow the latest diet to stay well, just use good old common sense. I've noticed recently that some of my friends and colleagues claim to catch the Flu every few weeks!Of course, they are really experiencing the common cold, though as unpleasant as it can be it is not the Flu.All the same, they experience cold symptoms on a regular basis such as stuffy, itchy nose, runny eyes, sneezing, sore throat, cough, headache, aches and pains etc.Not the ideal way to spend the winter! There is no cure for the common cold.Sure, some recommend a high dosage of Vit C and perhaps echinacea or Cold & Flu medication to relieve the symptoms. The bottom line is...there ain't no cure!I thought I'd offer some handy hints for prevention this winter.. If it is cold outside you need to up your defenses. To start on the outside... 1.Wrap up well. I don't know about all over the world, but in Dublin, younger people rule fashion over warmth. No kidding, exposed legs in the winter.Slight jackets,no hats. In Ireland there is usually a lot of rain, and wind. The climate is damp. Our skin is our outer layer, our first defense against cold and damp conditions.Wear a longer and warmer coat, cover your and ears and wear a scarf around your neck. This will stop the wind from invading your body. 2.If you get wet, take a hot shower and change into dry clothes asap.Having a spare change of clothes in the car or in work may make your day more pleasant and prevent the sneezes arising! 3.Make exercise part of your life. When the body is fit, cold and damp have a more difficult time invading the body. You will also feel mentally better as happy hormones are released into your body when you exercise!Choose something that you enjoy,or once enjoyed;try something new...just keep moving! 4.What you put into your body is also important.A balanced diet is always key,and listening to your body, how it is feeling.Eat the recommended 5 Fruit and Veg a day but with a change...make sure they are warm.Try stewed fruit for breakfast..gorgeous with cinnamon and nutmeg.Use berries for there Vit C content or dates, figs, prunes and pears for fibre.Serve with porridge or Granola.Yum! To get those veggies into you,try making your own soup.Yes!Ditch the packets and choose your favorite veggies. You'll have a lovely soup in half an hr.Add ginger, garlic,Shitake Mushrooms, onions red peppers, tomatoes, pumpkin, sweet potato all to boost your immune system. For a meat substitute, why not try adding beans to your soup.I love using butter beans, they contain protein whilst giving a lovely smooth texture! 5.Hydration:We all know it...2 litres a day! Here's a few hints... In winter, try to switch to hot or warm water..boiled and then fill your mug. This is a pleasant drink and can be used to replace tea or coffee.Add a slice of citrus fruit such as lemon or lime (or both!). If you don't like to drink water, add a glass a week-you'll feel better and you will help rid the body of nasties much quicker too! If you do catch a cold, these five hints still apply to help you feel better.I also find sea water nasal spray useful for preventing secondary infections. Hope this is helpful.A healthy winter to all! Thank you for sharing this information on winter health, Elaine. I believe that exercise is a great balancer to better health. We're becoming too inactive and living longer in our senior years. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
Good information but you have missed out one of the greatest causes of winter ills - the too rapid and too frequent changes in temperature. Often it is better to allow your home to cool down while you are out and then to increase the temperature when you return. I am fortunate in living in a country where I find heating superfluous. I am quite content to have my home at ambient temperatures (which can fall below freezing) and keep warm with an extra layer of clothing. This way, the only temperature changes I am subject to are of short duration when I enter a shop or office. (This is also better for my dogs since a heated home will deter the growth of their fur and leave them less protected against the cold when they go out with me.)
